Children from Oak Park Elementary School Music Conservatory A San Diego Public Elementary School
Dear Friends and Family,
Many of you have already contributed dollars for the Oak Park Music School in honor of Shep and we thank you for your generosity toward promoting music in the schools. Many others expressed a desire to contribute and we are happy to provide that opportunity as we launch The Shep Meyers Music for Literacy Fund.
The fund honors the memory of Shep Meyers, who was, as you know, a renowned and loved jazz pianist in San Diego for over 30 years. Shep mentored and inspired many local jazz musicians. Shep’s fellow musicians paid tribute to him at a standing-room-only concert at Croce’s in the San Diego Gaslamp area. They raised more than $5000.00 which Shep’s wife Janis presented to the Oak Park Elementary School Music Conservatory. Every student at Oak Park from kindergarten to fifth grade plays music. The program at Oak Park is in need of everything from instruments to sheet music, to new keyboards and instrument cases for their more than 750 students. The majority of the students will not have the opportunity to take private music lessons. Research shows when students learn music and play an instrument their reading, writing, and math scores improve. We hope you will join us in supporting instrumental music programs in public elementary schools in honor of our wonderful Shep. | Shep Meyers was a pianist, conductor, composer and arranger, from New York City, who had been living in San Diego, California for the past thirty-two years. His impressive list of credits include recording with Ella Fitzgerald, and playing with other musical greats such as Woody Herman, Billy Daniels, Julie London, Terry Gibbs, and Anita O'Day, as well as comedians Lenny Bruce, Steve Allen, Redd Foxx, and Henny Youngman. Shep served as conductor for comedian George Burns, and for Johnny Carson at the Sahara Hotel in Las Vegas. Please enjoy this website for more history about Shep! |
